HEALTH TOPICS A-Z
Secondhand Smoke
Secondhand tobacco kills over 50,000 non-smokers in the US every year. It is classified by the Environmental Protection Agency as a "Group A Carcinogen" – a substance known to cause cancer in
humans. There is no safe level of exposure to Group A toxins. The
Spokane Regional Health District is actively working with community
partners to reduce exposure to secondhand smoke throughout Spokane
County.
Tobacco Free Zones are in
dozens of park playgrounds, play structures, pools, skate parks and
other places where children gather and play - thanks to Tobacco Free Spokane and the City of Spokane Parks and Recreation Department. The goal is to provide
positive role modeling for children by non-smoking adults. Tobacco free
zones are self-policing by park users.
