Indicator: Unintentional Injury
Definition: Rate of inpatient hospitalizations due to unintentional injuries per 100,000 individuals. This number underestimates the prevalence of unintentional injuries because it does not capture the less severe injuries where hospitalization was not necessary.
Why is this important: This is a measure of morbidity that may have been preventable by taking additional precautions or under different circumstances. Physical injury may limit an individual's ability to fully interact with or contribute to the community. Additionally, community resources are used to provide medical care to these individuals.
Where are we: In 2009 in Spokane County, there were 3,400 hospitalizations for unintentional injuries. The unintentional injury rate significantly increased from 2005 to 2009. The 2009 unintentional injury rate in Spokane County was significantly higher than that of Washington State.
Health Disparities:
Among Spokane County residents in 2009:
There was no difference in unintentional injury between males and females.
Additional Information: In 2009, the leading causes of unintentional injury hospitalizations were falls (55.2%), motor vehicle crashes (7.6%), and poisonings (6.8%). The majority of fall injuries were seniors 65 years of age or older. Younger adults (18-34 years) and older adults (45-64 years) each accounted for one-third of motor vehicle crash injuries. The majority of unintentional injuries from poisonings occurred among older adults (45+ years).
