Indicator: Correction of Septic System Failure
Definition: Percent of identified on-site sewage system failures with corrective action initiated within two weeks.
Why is this important: On-site sewage systems, commonly called septic systems, treat and dispose of sewage on the site where it is created. It is important to correct on-site sewage system (OSS) failures when first detected to prevent surface and ground water contamination and risk to public health.
Where are we: In 2008 in Spokane County, there were 91 on-site sewage systems with a failure. Of those, 100% initiated corrective action within the first two weeks. The proportion of Spokane County OSS failures with adequate correction was significantly higher that of Washington State in 2008. |
