Indicator: Flu Shot (Adults)
 
Definition: Percent of adults who received a flu immunization in the last 12 months.
 
Why is this important: Influenza, or the flu, is a viral illness that causes respiratory symptoms. Flu symptoms range from mild to severe, and can lead to death. In Spokane County in 2009, flu and pneumonia were the tenth leading cause of death. The best way to prevent the flu is to get vaccinated each year, wash your hands, and cover your cough.
 
Where are we: In 2009 in Spokane County, 36% of adults reported receiving a flu shot in the last year. The proportion of adults getting a flu shot significantly increased from 2005 to 2009. Spokane County had a proportion of adults with a flu shot similar to that of Washington State.
 
Health Disparities:
Among adults in Spokane County in 2009:
 
  • Receiving a flu shot increased as age increased.
  • Females were more likely to have received a flu shot than males.
 
There was no difference in having a flu shot by race, education level, or income.
