Indicator: Drug Resistant Infection
Definition: Rate of inpatient hospitalizations with an infection with drug-resistant microorganisms per 100,000 individuals.
Why is this important: Some microorganisms have developed a resistance to medicines that were previously effective in treating infection. Infections caused by drug-resistant microorganisms can be transmitted easily from person-to-person and be very difficult to treat. Individuals infected may require isolation or prophylactic measures.
Where are we: In 2009 in Spokane County, there were 458 inpatient hospitalizations where the individual had a drug-resistant infection. There was a significant increase in the drug-resistant infection rate from 2005 to 2009. The 2009 drug-resistant infection rate in Spokane County was similar to that of Washington State.
