Indicator: Disability (Children)
Definition: Percent of children younger than 18 years of age with a physical, mental, or sensory disability lasting 6 months or longer.
Why is this important: Children with disabilities may require specialized assistance with medical care, self-care, and social interactions. Public health, the medical community, the education system, government funding programs (such as SSI), families, and the community all play a role in providing a coordinated approach to managing childhood disabilities.
Where are we: In 2010 in Spokane County, 9% of children had a disability. From 2006 to 2010, the proportion of children with a disability remained stable. The proportion of Spokane County children with a disability was similar to that of Washington State in 2010.
