Health Status

Indicator: Asthma (Youth)
 
Definition: Percent of youth in grades 6, 8, 10, and 12 who currently have asthma.
 
Why is this important: Asthma is the leading chronic illness among youth and is the leading cause of school absenteeism. With proper diagnosis, care, and management, asthma can be controlled.
 
Where are we: In 2010 in Spokane County, 15% of adolescents reported they currently have asthma. From 2006 to 2010, there was a significant increase in the proportion of adolescents with asthma. The proportion of Spokane County youth was higher than that of Washington State in 2010 and of the U.S. in 2009.
 
Health Disparities:
Among youth in Spokane County in 2010:
 
  • Youth with asthma increased as age increased.
  • Compared to Whites, Native Americans/Alaska Natives were more likely to have asthma.
  • Youth with asthma decreased as maternal education level increased.
 
There was no difference in asthma between males and females.
