Sigmoidoscopy/Colonoscopy
Health Care

Indicator: Sigmoidoscopy/Colonoscopy (Adults)

Definition: Percent of adults 50 years of age or older who have ever had a colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy.
Why is this important: Individuals should be screen for colorectal cancer soon after turning 50 years of age. Screening tests, such as a sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy, can find precancerous polyps so they can be removed before turning cancerous. They can also detect cancer early when treatment is more effective.

Spokane County had a similar proportion of adults having a sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy as that of Washington State and the U.S.
