Mammogram
Health Care

Indicator: Mammogram

Definition: Percent of women 40 years of age or older who have had a mammogram in the last 2 years.
Why is this important: The National Cancer Institute recommends that women 40 years of age or older should have a mammogram every 1-2 years to screen for breast cancer. Mammograms are the best method to detect breast cancer early when it is easier to treat and before it is big enough to feel or cause symptoms.

Where are we: In 2008 in Spokane County, 77% of women 40 years of age or older reported having a mammogram in the last 2 years. The proportion of women receiving a mammogram was stable from 2006 to 2008. Spokane County had a similar proportion of women receiving a mammogram as that of Washington State and the U.S.
