Indicator: Illicit Narcotic Use (Adults)
Definition: Percent of adults who used a a pain killer to get high, like Vicodin, OxyContin (sometimes called Oxy or OC) or Percocet (sometimes called Percs) in the last 30 days.
Why is this important: Use of narcotics can be beneficial in the clinical management of pain and controlling chronic pain issues. Individuals may develop a tolerance for the narcotic and this can increase the dose they need to take. Misusing prescription medications to get high may lead to an addiction and/or overdose.
Where are we: In 2009 in Spokane County, 1% of adults reported using illicit narcotics. The proportion of adult using illicit narcotics in Spokane County was similar to that of Washington State.
