Traffic Safety

Working closely with the Spokane County Traffic Safety Commission and the Washington State Traffic Safety Commission, the Health District organizes programs and campaigns to improve traffic safety.

Helmet Safety
Helmets reduce the risk of brain injury by 88%. Everyone that rides tricycles, bicycles, scooters, skateboards and roller blades should wear a bicycle helmet to prevent injury. Everyone who skis, snowboards, skates and sleds should also wear a helmet appropriate to the sport.

Highway Traffic Safety Projects
The Health District is currently working with community partners to design solutions to increase safety on the following corridors through engineering, enforcement and education. To get involved, call (509) 477-2342.

  • Memorial Highway (904) covers nearly eight miles through the city of Cheney, and north to the intersection with I-90 at Four Lakes.
  • Highway 291 Traffic Safety Project covers State Route 291 from Francis Rd. in Spokane to Nine Mile.
  • Highway 2 Pedestrian Traffic Safety Project was completed in June, 2002. It included lighted crosswalks and pedestrian refuge features along a one-mile stretch of Highway 2 bisecting the City of Airway Heights.

Driving For Life – Teen Safe Driving Project 2001-2003
Driving for Life was the result of a two-year grant from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The Spokane Regional Health District coordinated the project working closely with the Spokane Police Department and many community partners. Driving for Life included education and awareness activities, enhanced law enforcement, media efforts, and partnerships to address teen seat belt use, speeding, and impaired driving.
