Spokane Area Resource Guide to Suicide Prevention Programs (PDF)
Suicide Prevention Coalition (PDF) The Spokane Regional Health District leads the Suicide Prevention Coalition, a group of citizens concerned about suicide in our community. The coalition focuses on increasing public awareness and working with health care providers, employers and other organizations to recognize the warning signs of suicide.
Elder Depression, What You Need to Know (PDF) Older adults have a 50% higher risk for suicide than young people or the nation as a whole, and white men over the age of 80 are six times more likely to commit suicide than any other demographic group. This brochure discusses depression screening & lists area resources.
The media can play a powerful role in educating the public about suicide prevention. Stories about suicide can inform, but have the potential to do harm. Following the suggestions in "Reporting on Suicide: Recommendations for the Media" when covering suicide can help decrease suicide rates.
The warning signs of suicide can include:
- Depression
- Loss of interest in regular activities
- Decreased energy, fatigue
- Changes in appetite
- Increased drug or alcohol use
- Feelings of guilt
- Feeling hopeless
- Changes in physical appearance
- Insomnia or increase in sleep
- Talk of suicide
