Secondhand Smoke
Secondhand tobacco kills over 50,000 non-smokers in the US every year. It is classified by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as a Group A Carcinogen a substance known to cause cancer in humans. There is no safe level of exposure to Group A toxins. The Spokane Regional Health District is actively working with community partners to reduce exposure to secondhand smoke throughout Spokane County.
- Little Lungs Matter Campaign A public awareness campaign to educate parents and caregivers who smoke about the dangerous health impacts of secondhand smoke to children. The set of Little Lungs Fact Sheets (pdf) provide more information.
- Public Awareness Partnerships and sponsorships help increase public awareness of the dangers of secondhand smoke through public presentations, community events and in the local media. Community partners include the Spokane Indians, the Inland Northwest Asthma Coalition, American Lung Association of Washington, the American Heart Association, and the American Cancer Society.
- Policy Development The Tobacco Program works with Tobacco Free Spokane and community partners to develop policies to reduce exposure to secondhand smoke, such as tobacco free zones in parks.
