Physical Activity

In 2005, 36% of Spokane County adults were overweight and another 23% obese, resulting in over half of adults at an unhealthy weight. In addition to helping maintain a healthy weight, regular physical activity reduces the risk of heart disease, diabetes, colon cancer, high blood pressure, and symptoms of anxiety and depression. The Health District's Physical Activity & Nutrition program promotes physical activity to battle obesity and improve the health of the community. Call 324-1530 to get involved, or for more information.

Healthy Families, Active Kids Coalition
Current members include representatives from health care, public health, schools, higher education, state and local public agencies, recreation, the food industry, non-profit groups and various community-based organizations. The coalition is improving the health of our community through:

  • School collaboration - access to healthier foods and increased opportunities for physical activity
  • Environmental improvements - places to walk and be active in neighborhoods and the community
  • Public awareness campaigns - participation in the CDC's VERB campaign, a nationwide initiative to encourage physical activity among youth ages 9-13.

The Healthy Families, Active Kids Coalition meets on the third Friday of each month from 9–11 a.m. at the Spokane Regional Health District. Interested community members are encouraged to get involved. Call 324-1555.
