Mumps Info for Health Care Providers

Updated January 11, 2017

On December 14, Spokane Regional Health District (SRHD) announced the diagnosis of two mumps cases in vaccinated Spokane County children.  The risk to the general public is believed to be low; however, SRHD is asking healthcare providers to be vigilant for other possible mumps cases in the community.  It is possible that some exposed individuals may seek care and/or testing from local healthcare providers.

If a patient presents with concerns for mumps, please consult with Spokane Regional Health District Epidemiology at 509-324-1442 during business hours or 509-869-3133 after hours to determine appropriateness of testing and to receive instruction for specimen collection.  Mumps PCR testing using buccal swabs and urine is available through the Washington State Public Health Lab with approval from SRHD and the laboratory submission form below.  Serology is often not useful in vaccinated persons regardless of timing of specimen collection.
